The process of making this chair began in August of 2017 and wasn't completed until July of the following year. Beginning with a photo of a chair, I recreated a template in order to craft the rigid frame of the chair. The four pieces of the the frame are mortice and tenoned together on either side. The arm rests are attached in a similar manner. The five connecting pieces of the chair are also jointed to each side of the frame. 26 holes are drilled on either side of the frame in order to string the rope twice through each of the small blocks making up the seat, each of which also is doubled-drilled lengthwise. (27 holes are on the right side in order to hide the final knot under the seat. A polyester finish finalizes the project.
The complete chair contains a total of 108 individually handcrafted pieces. Thirteen rows of seven blocks are suspended through the frame by a continuous 50 foot nylon rope. Within the rigid frame, the seat is flexible and conforms to the body. This unique feature makes the chair extremely comfortable.
